A Note on the Weather

October is one of Tuscany's most beautiful months — expect mild temperatures between roughly 55°F and 72°F (13–22°C), long stretches of golden afternoon light, harvest-season color through the vineyards, and about six days of soft, intermittent rain spread across the month.

Days are warm enough for linen at lunch; evenings cool enough for a jacket or a light wrap. Pack a folding umbrella, comfortable walking shoes, and a layer you can shed by midday.

Practical Matters

Before You Go

A few practical notes to make your trip smooth from the moment you land. Please read through these before you pack — a little preparation goes a long way, especially if this is your first trip to Europe.

Money & Payments

Bring cash. Smaller cafés, taxis, markets, and gratuities are all easier in euros, and some places are cash-only.
Asbel's tip: convert your dollars at the airport when you arrive — he finds the exchange rate there works out better than converting before you leave.
Watch the conversion factor. The dollar does not stretch as far in Europe as it does at home, so budget accordingly and check the current rate before you go.
American Express is not always accepted in Italy. Bring a Visa or Mastercard as your primary card.
Notify your bank and credit card company of your travel dates before you leave, so your charges aren't flagged and blocked.
If a card reader asks whether to charge you in dollars or euros, always choose euros.

Tipping in Italy

Europe is generally a no-tipping culture. There is no 20% expectation the way there is in the States, and no one will think less of you for skipping it.

Many restaurants add a "coperto" (a small per-person cover charge) or "servizio" to the bill. That is not a tip and no additional gratuity is expected.
Asbel typically leaves 5–10% when the service has been exceptional. Consider that the ceiling, not the standard.
If you're unsure, it is perfectly fine to ask. Staff will rarely turn a tip away, but nobody is expecting one.
Do not feel pressured. Round up if you'd like to, and leave it at that.

Safety & Valuables

Keep passports, extra cash, and anything valuable locked in the safe in your hotel room. Carry only what you need for the day.
If you have never traveled to Europe before, buy a front-worn crossbody or belt bag before you go. Nothing hanging off your shoulder, nothing in your back pockets — this applies to men and women equally.
Pickpocketing in Italy is opportunistic rather than dangerous, and it happens in crowds: train stations, markets, the Ponte Vecchio, and busy piazzas.
Photograph your passport and credit cards and store the images somewhere separate from the originals.

Entry & Documents

Your passport must be valid for at least three months beyond your departure from the Schengen area and have at least two blank pages. Six months of validity is a safer buffer — check yours now, not in September.
No visa is required for U.S. citizens for stays under 90 days.
Europe's Entry/Exit System (EES) has been fully operational since April 10, 2026. On arrival you will have your photo and fingerprints taken at the border instead of receiving a passport stamp. Your first registration takes a few extra minutes, so allow extra time at passport control.
ETIAS, the new €20 travel authorization, is expected to launch in the last quarter of 2026 — which may fall right around our travel dates. Check the official EU site before you book your flights and again before you depart.
Enroll in the State Department's free Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) so the U.S. Embassy can reach you with alerts while you're abroad.
The State Department currently lists Italy at Level 2 — Exercise Increased Caution (the same level as much of Western Europe). Review the country page before you travel.

U.S. Customs: Coming Home

Declare everything you bring back. Declaring is free; failing to declare is what causes problems.

Each returning traveler has an $800 duty-free personal exemption. Anything above that is generally dutiable at a flat rate on the next $1,000.
Alcohol: roughly one liter per traveler aged 21+ enters duty-free. You may bring more, but it must be declared and may be subject to duty and state limits.
Cured meats are the one to watch: prosciutto, salami, and similar cured hams from Italy, France, Germany, and Spain may NOT be brought into the United States by travelers. Leave them behind.
Generally fine to bring home: olive oil, aged and hard cheeses, dried pasta, coffee, vinegar, chocolate, packaged sweets, and commercially packaged truffle products. Soft cheeses packed in liquid and anything with soil attached are not.
Currency: you must file a report if you carry $10,000 or more (or the equivalent) into or out of the United States.

Italian Customs & VAT

Arriving in Italy: you must declare cash or equivalents of €10,000 or more when entering or leaving the EU.
Personal allowances into the EU from outside are generous for ordinary personal belongings. There is no need to declare your own clothing, electronics, or gifts of modest value.
Shopping: Italy's standard VAT is 22%, and non-EU residents can reclaim a portion of it. The minimum is €70.01 spent in a single store on a single day.
Ask the shop for a Tax Free form at the time of purchase and keep your receipts. You must validate the form with customs at your final EU departure point — do this before you check your bags, since customs may ask to see the goods.

Packing & Layers

Early October is one of the best times of the year to be in Italy — but the days swing.

Mornings and evenings are cool; midday is warm. Layers are the answer: a light jacket, wrap, or blazer you can shed by lunch.
Comfortable walking shoes are essential for Saturday. See the Dress Code section for what to wear each day.
Pack a small folding umbrella. October averages a handful of soft, intermittent rainy days.
Italian outlets are Type F/L, 230V. Most modern U.S. chargers only need a plug adapter, not a voltage converter.
Pack medications in their original labeled containers in your carry-on, along with a change of clothes.

A Word of Caution

Be careful with social media recommendations

A lot of what trends online as a 'must-do' in Florence is paid placement, engagement bait, or simply out of date — and viral restaurants are exactly where you'll find two-hour lines and resold reservations at a markup. The Trip Guide above was hand-picked by Asbel, and the concierge at Hotel Lungarno and Alexandra Atzeni both know the city far better than an algorithm does. Start there.

One more note: consider waiting until you've left a place before posting location-tagged photos of it.
